Todorov's Narrative Theory

The Narrative has two parts;

  • Structure
  • Elements

The structure of the narrative is where Todorov's Theory comes into play.

There are five stages to every film. The fives stages are;
  • A state of equilibrium
  • Disruption of that order by an event
  • Recognition that the disorder has occurred
  • Attempt to repair the damage done
  • A return or restoration of a new equilibrium

Homework

Sinister
  1. A state of equilibrium - Family move into a new house for the father to write a new book on murders.
  2. Disruption of that order by an event - the father finds tapes of recorded murders.
  3. Recognition that the disorder has occurred - The demon keeps appearing in the tapes and he is trying to bring the father into the realm.
  4. Attempt to repair the damage done - The family move back to their old house.
  5. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium - The daughter is taken over by the demon and kills the father.

  1. WWW: You have applied this theory well to Sinister, showing good understanding of the different stages of the theory.
    EBI: You had explained the different stages in more detail before going into the task. What do you normally expect from each stage? What are the features?
